Hong Kong Young Musicians´ Wind Orchestra, HK - CISM competition

The wind orchestra from China will be performing at the CISM competition as well as doing several Open airs in Schladming and in Haus! We are very pleased to welcome them to Schladming this year!

The Hong Kong Young Musicians’ Wind Orchestra (HKYMWO), a non-profit making organization registered under the Societies Ordinance, was set up in December 2000 with the prime objective of nurturing the talents of young musicians through progressive training. The HKYMWO was founded by Mr. Wing-tsan LAM, Mr. Amos LEE and Mr. Joseph YU. Their dedicated drive and sheer enthusiasm towards inspiring the next generation with the love for music are well aware of by many students and parents. To further underscore their commitment, these three teachers have made their way to start off the dream of setting up HKYMWO, provide free tuition to participating members to perfect their musical excellence, and thereby enhance the public’s interest in the playing of wind instruments. It’s the Orchestra’s intention to expose Hong Kong’s brilliant young musicians to various artistic experiences, which include opportunities for exchange and touring with the other top wind band players and renowned professional musicians around the world.

The HKYMWO has more than 50 members, who are now training once a week preparing for local and overseas performances. The Orchestra has toured and performed in various concerts and performances including the 5th Summer Band Festival at Jeju (2001), the 12th and 15th Asia & Pacific band Directors Association Conference (2002 and 2008), the 4th Macau International Band Festival (2003), the 12th International Conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) in Singapore (2005) and the Hong Kong International Band Festival (from 2005-2009). The HKYMWO was honoured to have the opportunity to perform with the international renowned Euphonium soloist, Mr. Adam Frey twice at the Macau International Band Festival and the Hong Kong International Band Festival respectively.

In 2003, the HKYMWO presented its annual concert at the Hong Kong City Hall, with the famous local pianist, Dr. Yan-yan Chan, performing by Gershwin. In 2004 August, the Orchestra held its first student Concerto Concert, “Young Virtuosi – New Generation” which featured four of our own members as soloists. The concert acquired general acceptance from the public. Apart from performing, the Orchestra also participated in master classes by Prof. Jerry F. Junkin, Dr. Thomas E. Verrier and Mr. Masami Takakura which gather a high praise.

The HKYMWO was invited to perform in different events, including the 2002 “Music Inclusivity” organized by the Leo Club of Central, the 2002 “Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection”, and the “Kwai Tsing Mini Concert” in 2003. At the New Year’s Eves of 2003 and 2004, the HKYMWO was the only Orchestra to perform live on a TV program, accompanying the fireworks display celebrating the coming of the year!

Currently, the conductors of the HKYMWO are Mr. Amos LEE and Mr. Wing-tsan LAM.
