Irish Youth Wind Ensemble

The Irish Youth Wind Ensemble was formed in 1985 by James Cavanagh and Colonel Fred O’Callaghan. It is one of the lasting legacies of European Music Year when the Ensemble was one of many artistic initiatives throughout Ireland. That IYWE has survived and flourished for nearly forty is due to the enthusiasm and vision of its founders, the talent and enthusiasm of its members and the efforts and commitment volunteered by numerous supporters.

The group meets once every year for a week-long residential course in addition to other, shorter, gatherings and collaborations. The course commences with sectional rehearsals that are tutored by some of Ireland’s finest professional wind, brass and percussion players. The ensemble then moves into intensive rehearsals which are followed by a series of concerts in Ireland. IYWE has also toured abroad on numerous occasions.

The ethos of IYWE is to offer young wind, brass and percussion players an opportunity to study, perform and experience music specifically composed for the wind ensemble medium and to present music that otherwise would not be heard by Irish audiences. As a result, IYWE has had many world and Irish premieres.

IYWE has commissioned works by Philip Martin, John Buckley, Fergus Johnston, Jennifer Walshe and John Kinsella. The group has also recorded a highly praised and well-received CD of Music entitled Where The Wind Blows (after the work by John Buckley for wind ensemble of the same name). A second CD – featuring a recording of their performance at the WASBE conference in 2007 – is also available to buy on Amazon and iTunes.

James Cavanagh and Fred O’ Callaghan shared the podium until 1995. James Cavanagh was appointed Musical Director in 1995 and Ronan O’Reilly took over as Musical Director in 2007. Guest conductors who have worked with the group include Tim Reynish, John Wallace, John O’Connor, Fergus O’Carroll, William Halpin, Mark Armstrong, Wayne Jeffers, Captain Thomas Kelly and Dr Ken Dye.

In the past, IYWE have had the pleasure of working with Evelyn Glennie, Finghin Collins, Philip Martin and other distinguished soloists from Ireland and abroad. Recent soloists have included Martin Johnson, cello; Gary Curtin, euphonium; James Dunne, percussion; Kenneth Edge, saxophone; Michael Marshall, trombone and Aileen Cahill, piano.

Ronan O'Reilly hat einen Master-Abschluss im Dirigieren. In den letzten dreißig Jahren führten ihn seine Engagements als Dirigent verschiedener Orchester und Blasorchester durch Europa, Großbritannien und die USA. Seit 2007 ist er Chefdirigent und künstlerischer Leiter des Irish Youth Wind Ensemble (IYWE), Irlands führendem Blasorchester. Während seiner Zeit als künstlerischer Leiter hat Ronan das Repertoire des Ensembles erweitert und viele irische Erstaufführungen von US-amerikanischer und europäischer Literatur, die speziell für Blasorchester komponiert wurde, dirigiert.

Er freut sich, das Ensemble dieses Jahr im Bohemian Centre in Ardee (der Heimat der preisgekrönten Ardee Concert Band, bei der er Chefdirigent ist) und in der SETU Arena auf Einladung des Symphony Club of Waterford zu dirigieren. Im Jahr 2025 wird das IYWE sein 40-jähriges Jubiläum feiern. Zu diesem Anlass wird das Ensemble beim IAYO Festival of Youth Orchestras im Februar 2025 im National Concert Hall als Hauptakt auftreten und im Juli 2025 auf Einladung am Mid-Europe Festival in Schladming, Österreich, teilnehmen.

In seiner Laufbahn hatte Ronan Dirigentenpositionen bei den Dublin Youth Orchestras, dem Greystones Orchestra und dem University of Limerick Orchestra inne. Zudem war er Gastdirigent bei zahlreichen Ensembles, darunter das Irish Philharmonic Orchestra, die Symphonie- und Kammerorchester des Dublin Institute of Technology (TUD), das Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, das Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra und die Symphonic Wind Bands der University of Notre Dame in den USA. Regelmäßig arbeitet er als Gastdirigent und Workshop-Leiter mit internationalen Blasorchestern, die Irland besuchen, wie dem Wind Ensemble der University of Massachusetts und der Shorecrest High School Band, Washington. Kürzlich arbeitete er mit der Band der Texas Woman's University zusammen. Seit 2019 ist Ronan musikalischer Leiter der preisgekrönten Ardee Concert Band und seit über einem Jahrzehnt Tutor für Holz- und Blechbläser sowie Schlagzeuger im National Youth Orchestra of Ireland (NYOI). In den letzten Jahren war er auch als Probenleiter des NYOI tätig, zuletzt beim Sommer-Intensivkurs 2024.

Ronan konzentriert sich inzwischen hauptsächlich auf seine Karriere als Dirigent, ist jedoch auch als Lehrer, Musiker, Komponist, Arrangeur, Juror und Prüfer tätig. Als Instrumentalist besitzt er ein LTCL-Diplom im Oboenunterricht und ein ALCM-Diplom in Klavier. Er hat in weltbekannten Konzertsälen wie der Carnegie Hall in New York, der Boston Symphony Hall und dem Chicago Symphony Center gespielt.
