Studenten Harmonie Orkest Twente (SHOT)

The Student Wind Orchestra Twente was founded in 1991. The wind orchestra, better known as SHOT, is affiliated with the University of Twente in Enschede. On average, the orchestra consists of 65 musicians from the university and surrounding colleges. Since 1993, the orchestra has been conducted by Ronny Buurink.

Since the orchestra's foundation, SHOT has had the tradition of giving two concerts at the university every year. In preparation for these concerts, SHOT retreats to a small village to put the finishing touches on musicality during a rehearsal weekend. Besides these performances, SHOT regularly performs at other venues nationwide.

Over the years, SHOT has developed even more traditions. For instance, once every two years we go on a concert tour. These trips include a festival abroad and often participation in an international competition. In recent years, visits have included Germany, Spain, Austria, England, and Italy.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the orchestra took a trip to China. As part of its 25th anniversary, SHOT performed at Muziekcentrum in Enschede. In addition, SHOT gave concerts in 2015 in cooperation with the Symfonisch Harmonieorkest Amsterdam in the Beurs van Berlage and with Koninklijke Harmonie Oefening en Uitspanning in 's Hertogenbosch. On 24 April 2022, SHOT was once again able to celebrate its 30th anniversary in collaboration with the SHOT Old Members Orchestra (SOLO) at the Muziekcentrum.

In 2016, SHOT participated in the Mid Europe Festival in Schladming, Austria. Here a first prize was achieved within the class and the high score resulted in a second prize in the overall ranking. In March 2018, SHOT participated in the Federal Competition in Zutphen and achieved a good result of 88.83 points in the first division. In 2023, a score of 90 points was achieved at the Open Dutch Wind Band Championships, which was good for first prize.

The association has not been idle in the past year either. Besides a try-out concert for the ONHK, SHOT also performed a SHOT & SHAFFY concert in the Muziekcentrum in Enschede. Here, SHOT performed the music of Ramses Shaffy in cooperation with Micheline Van Hautem, with a challenging programme before the break including a rendition of Jekyll & Hyde with solo trumpeters Jordi Lensink and Jeroen Schippers. The orchestra also conducted a Christmas tour through the east of the Netherlands from 14 December to 17 December 2023, with a total of nine concerts in Enschede, Oldenzaal and Arnhem.
